2008 is promising to be a very exciting one here at West Winds Alpaca Ranch! There’s a total of 12 crias due this year, beginning with the first cria due May 26, and births continuing right into October.
We’re looking forward to the return of our leased herdsire, Bello Prophet, who has been spending the winter months at his home farm, BelleauWood Farm Alpacas in Charlotte, NC. Prophet is a spectacular male and we are eagerly awaiting the birth of his crias that are due this year. We have a total of 5 Prophet babies due. Prophet will be returning to our ranch this spring and we expect him to stay with us through July of 2009.
We’re hoping to expand again this year, putting in more pasture. In 2007, we were able to have the maintenance barn rebuilt after the December 23, 2006 fire that destroyed our original barn. We also put in a temporary store again. We grew even more by building a second alpaca barn to allow us to spread everyone out more and have a weanling area. That has helped tremendously.
As always, we welcome visitors to our ranch to meet our alpacas and see what we do. For those that have visited us in the past, come see the changes we’ve undergone since the fire. For those of you who have not had the opportunity to visit yet, please give us a call or email us. We arrange ranch tours by appointment & are happy to have one visitor, or an entire group! We love to show off our beautiful animals and tell you all about them and why we raise them!

Shearing Weekend, West Winds Alpaca Ranch, West Valley, NY
Friday, Saturday, & Sunday, May 2, 3, & 4, 2008
Ever wonder how an alpaca is shorn? Well, here’s your chance to see, up close & personal! We’ll be busy shearing all three days. Our shearer, Cindy Vars of Autumn Hill Alpacas in Andover, NY, has agreed to come shear our alpacas again this year. Cindy does a fabulous job and we always have a great time. It’s a lot of work, but it’s necessary to keep our alpacas cool in the summer heat. We are always happy to have people come see how it’s done & never turn down the offer of help – so if you’d like to give us a hand sometime that weekend, we’d love to have you there! If you’re interested in checking it out, or assisting, please email us at westwindsalpacas@lycos.com and let us know! Extra hands are always a huge help and it’s a fantastic learning experience!
Western NY Dairy & Ag Fest, Springville, NY

If I’m not mistaken, this will be our 5th year attending this event! Wow, it’s hard to believe – but we have always had a fantastic time and have met lots of wonderful people over those years. This is a wonderful family event, with a huge parade on Saturday, lots of fun things for kids to do, a big craft show, rides, music, & lots of food all weekend long. We’ll be there again, with a couple of our alpacas for “show & tell” and we’ll have our alpaca products set up and available for sale. Please stop by and see us, meet our alpacas, & spend some time learning about these awesome creatures!
